The United States recorded a budget deficit of $1.99 trillion in fiscal 2026, an increase of $217 billion from the prior year, according to Reuters. Figures released by the Treasury Department on Friday showed the shortfall for the year ended September 30 was the largest in five years and the third-largest annual deficit on record.
The fiscal 2026 gap compared with a $1.78 trillion deficit in fiscal 2025. The last larger shortfall came in fiscal 2021, when the deficit reached $2.77 trillion amid pandemic relief spending. The fiscal 2026 result marked the first full budget year of President Donald Trump's second term.
Receipts and Outlays
Total receipts for fiscal 2026 reached a record $5.40 trillion, an increase of $169 billion, or 3%, from $5.24 trillion in fiscal 2025. Outlays also set a record at $7.40 trillion, up $386 billion, or 6%, from $7.01 trillion a year earlier.
Debt-service costs totaled a record $1.36 trillion, rising by $144 billion, or 12%. That category is now exceeded only by Social Security and the combined spending on Medicare and Medicaid. Total US debt passed the $40 trillion mark about two months ago.
Tariff Refunds and Revenue
Net tariff receipts fell by $22 billion after a Supreme Court ruling this year invalidated a large portion of the tariffs imposed during Trump's first year in office. The decision led to $145 billion in tariff refunds over the year, pushing net tariff income down 11% to about $173 billion.
Deficit-to-GDP Ratio
A Treasury official said the department estimated a deficit-to-GDP ratio of 6.2% for fiscal 2026 but did not disclose the GDP estimate used. The comparable actual ratio for fiscal 2025 was 5.8%.
For September, the final month of fiscal 2026, the Treasury reported a deficit of $27 billion, compared with a surplus of $198 billion in the same month a year earlier.
